My Business Account

My Business Account is the CRA’s secure online portal for managing a business’s tax accounts. Owners, partners, directors and officers sign in through their personal CRA account and link the business number. Authorized representatives, such as an accountant or bookkeeper, reach the same services through Represent a Client once the business has authorized them.

Authorizing a representative to reach your CRA accounts

A business owner signs in to My Business Account and authorizes an accountant, who then uses Represent a Client to reach the same CRA accounts.

What it is and who can use it

My Business Account is added inside a personal CRA account, so there is no separate login for the business. To use it for the first time, your Social Insurance Number must be linked to the business number. The CRA notes that this link may not be possible if no GST/HST or T2 return has been filed and the number was registered more than 28 days earlier, so ask for help early in that situation.

Use the nine-digit federal business number here. An Ontario business identification number is not a substitute. GST/HST accounts administered by Revenu Québec are not managed in this portal.

What you can do in it

The portal gives access to program accounts such as GST/HST, payroll and corporation income tax. You can view online mail, which is the default unless the business has chosen paper, and receive email notices when events such as a payment being applied occur. Where a business owes $1,000 or more in corporate income tax, GST/HST or payroll debt, you can manage the balance, including paying in full or over time.

It is also where a business owner registers a formal dispute, which is how an objection is filed online. Our entry on notice of objection covers that process. The full list of services is on the CRA’s own pages and changes over time, so check it rather than assuming a feature exists.

Authorizing your accountant

The fastest route is for the owner to add the representative under the Profile section of My Business Account. Alternatively, a representative with a RepID can submit a request in Represent a Client, and the owner confirms or denies it in My Business Account. A mailed Form AUT-01 gives offline access only, meaning phone, fax, mail or in person, and does not provide online access.

For example, a corporation’s director signs in, adds the accountant’s RepID, and the accountant then enters the business number in Represent a Client to see that account. This is an illustrative sequence; the available access levels are described on the CRA page, so confirm what you are granting.

What to discuss with your accountant

Decide who at the business holds the login, which representatives are authorized, and who is notified of CRA mail. Review authorizations when you change accountants or staff, and remove access that is no longer needed. Never share your own credentials as a shortcut; authorization exists so you do not have to.
