GST/HST calculator and reverse HST calculator (Ontario 13%)

Use the calculator to add 13% Ontario HST to a price, or switch to the reverse HST calculator to take HST out of a tax-included total and find the pre-tax amount. Ontario is selected to start; every other province and territory is in the list.

How the calculation works

Reverse HST (tax-included to pre-tax): pre-tax amount = total ÷ 1.13 in Ontario, and HST = total − pre-tax amount. Do not multiply the total by 13%: that takes 13% of an amount that already contains the tax and overstates it. In general, pre-tax amount = total ÷ (1 + rate). Adding tax: total = pre-tax amount × (1 + rate). In an HST province the rate is the federal 5% plus the provincial part: 8% in Ontario, 9% in Nova Scotia and 10% in New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador and Prince Edward Island. Elsewhere only the 5% GST applies. Amounts are rounded to the cent.

A worked example

At an illustrative $1,130 receipt that includes Ontario HST, the pre-tax amount is $1,130 ÷ 1.13 = $1,000 and the HST is $130. Multiplying $1,130 by 13% instead would give $146.90, which is wrong. Going the other way, $1,000 before tax plus 13% HST ($130, made up of $50 federal and $80 provincial) is $1,130. In Nova Scotia the same $1,000 carries 14% HST, or $140, since the provincial part fell to 9% on April 1, 2025.

GST/HST rates by province and territory

The rate follows the province or territory where the supply is made. To reverse a tax-included amount, divide it by the number in the last column.

Assumptions and limits

PST, RST and QST are separate taxes and are not included. If you sell in British Columbia, Manitoba, Saskatchewan or Quebec, the GST shown here is only part of what the customer pays. The tool assumes a fully taxable supply: zero-rated and exempt supplies, tax-paid-by-recipient situations and special rules are not modelled. The federal and provincial split is for understanding the rate; on an invoice for an HST province, show the total HST rate. Place of supply rules decide which rate applies, so confirm yours before charging.
