GST/HST

GST/HST explained for Ontario businesses: registration, the small-supplier threshold, input tax credits, the quick method, place of supply and return filing.

The GST/HST collection cycle

A repeating cycle of charging GST/HST, claiming input tax credits, filing the return and remitting the balance.

Visual labels: Charge the tax; Claim credits; File the return; Remit the balance.

GST/HST is collected on most sales and then passed on to the Canada Revenue Agency, so the money in your account at any moment is partly not yours. Registering at the right time, charging the correct rate, claiming input tax credits and filing on schedule are the habits that keep the account tidy.

This hub lists the definitions, articles, guides and tools that deal with the tax from a business owner’s point of view. Some explain the vocabulary, including small supplier, net tax and place of supply. Others work through practical questions, such as whether you must register, how the quick method compares with regular accounting and what changes when a customer is outside Ontario. The calculators help you check a price or a threshold, but the rules have exceptions, so confirm your own position with the CRA’s current guidance and your accountant before you register, change method or file.
